Desley Stewart
As a representational artist working mainly in pastel, I’m drawn to the complexity of nature and enjoy finding beauty in the everyday. It’s rewarding to see people connect with my artwork, particularly when it prompts a special memory.
My creative process involves collecting my own reference material, freehand sketching my subject onto a pastel surface, and using soft pastel to build up layers of form. I’ve surrendered to my passion for detail, and my artwork can take many hours. My Beachcomber series of seashell artworks takes a close-up look at the texture of these natural treasures, and prompts memories of long, lazy days at the beach. All shells in this series are from Australia’s Central Coast.
I’m a member of the Pastel Society of Australia, an Exhibiting Member of the Royal Art Society of NSW and part of the Deepwater Art Space creative community. I enjoy tutoring and sharing my love of art with others.
